NEW YORK -- The N.F.L has agreed to a cash settlement of $760 million to more than 4,000 retired NFL players with dementia or other problems who claimed the effects were caused by consistent head trauma, the New York Times reported.

The money would be used to pay for exams, medical bills and general compensation for retired players suffering from dementia. The Times reported the settlement was good for the league, which faced a lengthy trial that could have exposed "revealing" outlining the number of concussions in the league.

The NFL still denies it deliberately misled players on the issue of concussions.

Recent reports by the Times and other media outlets outline the prevalence of concussion caused head traumas in retired players. Many former players claim to have debilitating symptoms and require constant medical monitoring.
