Police investigate deadly shooting involving an officer in Lake Stevens
LAKE STEVENS, Wash. - Police are investigating an incident that led to a deadly officer involved shooting in Lake Stevens on Friday.
According to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART), at around 11:30 a.m., police responded to the 600 block of State Route 9 in Frontier Village for reports of a carjacking.
Responding officers located the suspect vehicle and chased them southbound on SR-9. Eventually, the suspect got out of the car and ran away.
When police caught up with the suspect, a physical altercation ensued. The suspect then broke free from the altercation and hopped inside the police cruiser. That's when the suspect was shot.
Authorities say the suspect died on the scene.
The suspect's identity and manner of death will not be released until the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office finishes an autopsy.
State Route 9 was closed from 20th St. to S. Lake Stevens Rd, and 20th St. is closed from 91st Ave. SE.
At around 1:00 p.m., the Lake Stevens School District sent out an alert about a large police presence in the south end of the city. Families were told to expect delays in the areas of SR 9 that are closed off for the police investigation.
