Police shooting investigation underway in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood
SEATTLE - Authorities are investigating a shooting involving a police officer in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood late Thursday afternoon.
What we know:
The shooting occurred near the intersection of NW 62nd St and 28th Ave NW, and the Seattle Police Department confirmed it involved several officers.
According to Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes, officers responded to a domestic violence call, where the caller stated a man was following her. The suspect and caller were known to each other.
Three officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect, and the suspect allegedly drew a gun. The suspect and officers then exchanged gunfire.
The suspect was shot multiple times by the officers, and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
One officer suffered a graze wound to the leg. It's unknown if the suspect or officer's gunfire caused the injury, and he has since been treated and released from the hospital.
Witnesses told FOX 13 they heard 6–10 shots around the time of the shooting.
"I was sitting in my living room, and at around 5:45 p.m. I heard many pops, pop, ‘pop, pop, pop, pop,’" said one neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. "Once I saw all the police cars and the ambulance I knew something serious had happened."
There were several families using the nearby Ballard Community Center at the time. They told us that kids and adults ran into the community center to take shelter.
"It is customary to shelter in place whenever we have an exchange of gunfire, so that did happen. It has since been lifted and no one inside was injured or affected by this," said Chief Shon Barnes.
The King County Independent Force Investigations Team is now leading the investigation.
