Several rounds of rain will hit western Washington this week as a classic atmospheric river takes aim at the region.

A warm front arrived Sunday night and will continue to cross through the region during the day on Monday, increasing rain in the lowlands and rising snow levels to around 8000 feet.  As the snow transitions to rain, there will be a short window of freezing rain possible in the mountain passes Monday morning.  Keep an eye on conditions as it may be icy in sports.   Breezy winds are also expected both Monday and Tuesday. 

Unfortunately for skiers and snowboarders, the feet of mountain snow that accumulated in recent days will take a hit during this warmer stretch. With snow levels rising and temperatures climbing, a good portion of that fresh snowpack will begin to melt and turn slushy on the slopes.

Seattle weather starts cold and icy Sunday morning before rain chances return later in the day and into the workweek.

Temperatures are expected to fall again on Saturday night. Any leftover moisture on roads and sidewalks could easily refreeze overnight, so slick and icy spots are possible again by Sunday morning.

Drier (albeit icy) weather is ahead for Saturday night to Sunday morning in western Washington after an active snowy Friday, but lowland rain and mountain snow return Sunday afternoon. Earlier this morning, a rain–snow mix developed across parts of Western Washington as a convergence zone set up over portions of King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties. In some locations, snowflakes were not only falling but briefly accumulated on grassy surfaces and rooftops. We could still see minor snow under this zone at about 500 feet in elevation and above it this afternoon before showers diminish.

Both directions of I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass closed Friday morning and will remain closed overnight due to heavy snow, collisions and spinouts.
