More snow to hit Seattle area overnight, icy roads expected Tuesday

Snow fell across western Washington Monday morning, bringing slick conditions and travel disruptions, and more widespread snowfall is expected overnight.

Looking ahead:

According to FOX 13 Seattle’s Chief Meteorologist Brian MacMillan, a mix of rain and snow showers will continue throughout Monday before temperatures drop, increasing the chances for accumulation.

Will the Seattle-area see more snow showers on Monday?

"We could see more quick-hitting snow showers this morning," MacMillan said. "The heavier the showers, the better the chance for some brief sticking, even on the roads."

As temperatures warm into the upper 30s Monday afternoon, rain and snow showers will mix before another round of snowfall moves in overnight.

What does the snow forecast look like on Tuesday in Western WA?

Between midnight and 6 a.m. Tuesday, western Washington could see a widespread trace to 2 inches of snow, with areas from Everett to Olympia most likely to be impacted.

Travel impacts, flight delays

Snow and icy conditions have already led to travel disruptions.

By the numbers:

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport reported more than 110 flight delays and 59 cancelations as of 10 a.m., with Alaska Airlines experiencing the most disruptions.

Commuters should prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions, as snow and ice are expected to affect Tuesday morning’s commute.

"Tuesday morning’s commute will be similar to this morning’s, maybe worse," MacMillan warned.

Officials urge caution on the roads

Snohomish County Public Works is urging drivers to give snowplows and deicing vehicles plenty of space.

"Allow a minimum following distance of 200 feet from plows and deicers while they work," officials advised on social media. "If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of the displaced snow and ice, or sand spray."

School closures, late starts

Several western Washington school districts were closed and many experienced delayed starts on Monday due to the winter weather.

What's next:

Any precipitation that falls overnight will likely be in the form of snow, potentially leading to minor accumulations where this happens.
