RENTON, Wash. - Fire crews have recovered the body of a man who was killed in a trench collapse in Renton on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Renton Regional Fire Authority, crews were called to NE 38th Street and Lincoln Ave. NE around 1 p.m. for a rescue due to a trench collapse. The area off I-5, near May Creek Park, is under construction for sewer and storm drain work.
Puget Sound Fire said the man was down about 20 feet in the trench. The man had no pulse when crews initially reached him.
It's unclear how the man ended up in the trench. Authorities have not specified what construction company he worked for.
It took around seven and a half hours for firefighters to stabilize the trench and clear the dirt to get him out.
The man has been identified as 36-year-old Surjit Gill.
Nine different agencies across the region responded to assist.
The Department of Labor & Industries will be investigating the trench collapse. They also investigated a deadly trench collapse in Shoreline over the summer, when two men were killed.
