Man arrested after firing numerous gunshots in Kent, victim unharmed

Police arrested a suspect for allegedly firing multiple shots at another man in Kent early Friday morning.

According to the Kent Police Department (KPD), officers responded to reports of gunshots heard near Pacific Highway South and South 240th Street at around 2:15 a.m.

When officers arrived, they could hear ongoing gunshots coming from the Highline Apartment Complex along 30th Avenue South.

During the search, officers found a 36-year-old Seattle man hiding in the bushes of the complex. It was determined he was the shooter. Officers also found a 20-year-old Kent man, later determined to be the victim. Fortunately, the victim was not hit by any of the gunshots.

The KPD then brought in a K-9 unit to search for the gun discarded by the suspect. Eventually, the K-9 found the firearm. Officers continued to check whether anyone else in the area had been struck by the numerous gunshots.

What they're saying:

"I am grateful that community members stepped up and provided officers with the information they needed to safely respond and intervene in what could have been a tragic loss of life. I am also incredibly proud of the courage and professionalism of our officers, who brought this incident to a safe resolution," said Chief Rafael Padilla.

What's next:

The suspect was booked into the Regional Justice Center on charges of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. Kent detectives are still investigating the incident to determine the motive behind the gunshots.
