Manhunt in Tacoma, WA over, suspect arrested after officer-involved shooting

A wanted man who was shot by deputies in Tacoma has been arrested, a day after the deputy-involved shooting.

Violent escape in Pierce County

Authorities in Pierce County launched a massive manhunt on Sunday after a confrontation with 23-year-old Skyler Cantrell, who had multiple felony warrants.

The backstory:

At around 2 a.m. Sunday, deputies positioned their patrol cars around Cantrell as he was slumped over in his vehicle along East 72nd Street near Midland. But once he woke up, he began ramming vehicles and drove at a deputy, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.

Cantrell was able to escape, but deputies shot him as he fled. No deputies were injured by gunfire.

Cantrell's car was later found crashed along 85th Street East, about a mile south of the shooting. Neighbors reported encountering a man covered in blood asking for help and entering houses in the area. Authorities searched the area for hours but did not find Cantrell.

Officers arrest Cantrell on Monday

What we know:

A day later, the South Sound Gang Task Force took Cantrell into custody. On Monday, officers received information that he was located along 75th Avenue Court East. After conducting surveillance, officers located Cantrell and arrested him.

Cantrell had multiple gunshot wounds from the incident on Sunday. He is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Once Cantrell is medically cleared, he will be booked into the Pierce County Jail for his warrants and other charges for the deputy-involved shooting.

Neighbors react to scenes of violence in Tacoma

What they're saying:

"Got woken up at about 4 a.m. to my dog, Jasper here, kind of freaking out, you know, barking quite a bit," Jake Gore said.

He lives in Tacoma and tells FOX 13 that he got up, looked around the house, then went back to bed. About an hour later, sheriff’s deputies knocked on his door.

"They searched my neighbor's yard," he said. "I think probably four or five sheriff's deputies, with a dog and flashlights on, and I let them search my yard."

After they left, he noticed blood splatters in the side room of his home.

"I noticed the door to the outside, there was quite a bit of blood, you know, checked myself and my dogs made sure it wasn't ours and I think at that point it was pretty clear that he had gotten in the house," Gore said. He believes his dog, Jasper, scared the person away.

"I felt happy that, you know, Jasper certainly did his job, I'm not going to be doubting his barking ever again, and he's definitely going to be getting a steak for dinner tonight," Gore said.

He adds, he’s relieved that he and his animals weren’t hurt because this could have ended a lot worse.
