Over 40,000 bottles of Walgreens nasal spray recalled due to bacteria contamination, FDA says

A voluntary recall has been issued for 41,328 bottles of a Walgreens brand nasal spray over concerns the product may be contaminated with pseudomonas lactis, a bacterium found in raw milk.

The Food and Drug Administration announced in a letter that this was a Class II recall for the nasal spray sold at Walgreens stores nationwide.

Under a Class II recall, the FDA defines this as a circumstance in which use of or exposure to a "violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The recall covers 1.5-oz (45mL) bottle of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol.

Food and Drug Administration officials said the nasal spray has the following lots and expiration dates: 

  • Lot No. 71409 — Expires: 2/28/2027.
  • Lot No. 71861 — Expires: 8/31/2027.

In response to the affected products, a Walgreens spokesperson told FOX Business that "Under the guidance of the FDA, our supplier has initiated a voluntary recall of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray WITH XYLITOL. This was done out of an abundance of caution and the safety of our customers remains our top priority."

What you can do:

A Walgreens spokesperson told FOX Business that consumers with the recalled nasal spray should stop using it and return it to the store location where they purchased it to receive a full refund.
