Man who killed Renton girlfriend after breakup gets 33 years in prison
SEATTLE -- Jarod Thomas Lane, 21, was sentenced to 33 years in prison Friday for killing his former high school girlfriend, 17-year-old Jessica Scholl, in her Renton family home last year and setting the house on fire.
Lane pleaded guilty in King County Superior Court last month to first-degree murder and first-degree arson.
Renton firefighters found Jessica's body in her family's two-story house in Renton on May 25, 2012, after putting out a fire there. The King County Medical Examiner’s office said Scholl died from multiple injuries to her head and neck.
Lane, who had graduated from Lindbergh High School in 2011, had a long relationship with Jessica before she broke it off about two weeks before the slaying. He fled the state and was arrested three days after the murder near Oklahoma City after his car ran out of gas and state troopers discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest. He waived extradition to Washington state.
