Mariners lose Game 4, 8-2, to Blue Jays; ALCS tied 2-2 - 8:30 p.m.
The ALCS is all tied at 2-2 after an 8-2 Mariners loss to the Blue Jays in Game 4 on Thursday night.
Toronto scored eight more runs on 11 hits against Seattle pitching as their offense has roared to life to even up the series.
Seattle couldn't do enough damage against Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer, who allowed three hits and four walks over 5 ⅔ innings, but limited the Mariners to just two runs with five strikeouts.
The Mariners' best chance for a rally in the sixth inning ended with Josh Naylor thrown out at third base to end the inning on an RBI single by Eugenio Suárez. Seattle cut the lead to 5-2, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. immediately restored the four-run cushion with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Blue Jays pouring it on again in Game 4 - 8:05 p.m.
Two straight playoff home games have spiraled out of control for the Mariners in the ALCS.
A two-run single from Andrés Giménez in the eighth inning has given the Blue Jays an 8-2 lead in Game 4.
Ernie Clement singled and Addison Barger walked to put two runners on with no outs against Emerson Hancock. A sacrifice bunt by Isiah Kiner-Falefa advanced the runners into scoring position for Toronto. Giménez's shot glanced off the glove of Hancock and died in shallow center field against a drawn-in infield, which allowed both runners to score for an 8-2 Blue Jays lead.
Hancock got out of the eighth for Seattle, but it's now a six-run deficit with Toronto six outs away from tying the series at 2-2.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. restores a four-run Toronto lead - 7:45 p.m.
The Blue Jays have thrown a big counter punch yet again.
After the Mariners cut the Toronto lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. restored it with one swing in the top of the seventh.
Guerrero crushed a 1-1 sinker on the outer edge of the plate from Eduard Bazardo to right field, sailing over the glove of a leaping Dominic Canzone at the wall for a solo home run and a 6-2 Blue Jays lead.
Bazardo struck out Alejandro Kirk and Daulton Varsho to clear the inning, but the Mariners continue to face an uphill climb.
Mariners trim Blue Jays lead to 5-2 in 6th - 7:40 p.m.
The Mariners have been able to keep Toronto from adding any more to their lead, but have struggled to do anything offensive themselves against Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer.
After Josh Naylor's home run in the second inning, the Mariners have put just three runners on base against Scherzer through six innings.
Naylor singled in the fourth inning, Leo Rivas walked (and was picked off) in the third, and Dominic Canzone singled to lead-off the fifth. A nice running catch by right fielder Addison Barger did take away a potential double for Rivas in the fifth as well, but Toronto is one of the best defensive teams in baseball this season.
A two-out walk of Jorge Polanco in the sixth finally ended Scherzer's outing as Toronto manager John Schneider turned to left-hander Mason Fluharty to face the left-handed Naylor.
Naylor walked against Fluharty to put two runners on and Eugenio Suárez delivered an RBI single to right field that scored Polanco to cut the Toronto lead to 5-2. However, the Blue Jays got the trail runner in Naylor at third base to end the Seattle threat.
Blue Jays extend lead to 5-1 in 4th inning - 6:50 p.m.
Leo Rivas walked to lead off the third inning for Seattle, but was picked off by Max Scherzer. A Randy Arozarena flyout and a strikeout of Cal Raleigh provided no offense for Seattle.
Toronto then added on to their lead again in the fourth.
A bloop single from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and sacrifice bunt by Andrés Giménez put a runner on second with one out. Manger Dan Wilson left left-hander Gabe Speier in to face George Springer, who doubled into the left field corner to score Kiner-Falefa for a 4-1 Toronto lead.
After a chopper to shortstop by Nathan Lukes moved Springer to third, Matt Brash threw a wild pitch that got away from Raleigh as Springer scored to makeit a 5-1 Blue Jays advantage.
Brash followed by getting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fly out to right field, but the Mariners are trying to dig out of a hole for the second straight night.
Andrés Giménez home run, Daulton Varsho bases loaded walk gives Blue Jays 3-1 lead - 6:15 p.m.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa – getting his first start in the series after Anthony Santander was removed from the Blue Jays' postseason roster – doubled inside the bag at third base down the left field line to put pressure on Luis Castillo in the third inning.
Then for the second night in a row, Andrés Giménez delivered a two-run home run from the No. 9 spot in the lineup against a Seattle starter, winning an eight-pitch battle with a blast to right field on a slider for a 2-1 Blue Jays lead.
Nathan Lukes and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered one-out singles as movement started to pick up in Seattle's bullpen with Gabe Speier beginning to warm up.
Alejandro Kirk walked to load the bases and manager Dan Wilson turned to Speier to try and get out of the jam.
Daulton Varsho worked a walk against Speier to score Lukes for a 3-1 Blue Jays lead, but Speier struck out Ernie Clement swinging, and Addison Barger looking to escape further damage for Seattle.
Josh Naylor solo homer gives Mariners 1-0 lead - 6:00 p.m.
Josh Naylor gave the Mariners the lead on a home run early for the third straight game in a row.
Naylor hammered a changeup from Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer left over the outside edge of the plate to center field, just sailing beyond the glove of Daulton Varsho and the wall for a solo home run and a 1-0 Mariners lead in the second inning.
It would be the only baserunner in the inning for Seattle, as Eugenio Suárez and J.P. Crawford flew out to right field, and Dominic Canzone grounded out to second base.
In the top of the inning, a two-out single from Ernie Clement against Luis Castillo served as the first baserunner of the game for Toronto. However, Crawford made his second strong defensive play in as many innings, leaping to snag a line drive from Addison Barger to end the inning.
Scoreless first inning - 5:48 p.m.
Luis Castillo made quick work of the Blue Jays in the first inning with the help of a couple strong defensive plays.
Randy Arozarena made a good running catch into the left field corner to take away a potential lead-off double for George Springer. J.P. Crawford then ended the inning making a stop of a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounder deep behind second base and just beat him with the throw for the final out of the inning.
Like it was in Game 3 against George Kirby, Toronto's approach appears to be to attack early in counts. Springer and Nathan Lukes saw only two pitches in recording their outs, and Guerrero saw three from Castillo for a seven-pitch inning.
Meanawhile, Toronto starter Max Scherzer issued consecutive walks to Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez to put two runners on with one out. After a first pitch ball to Jorge Polanco, Scherzer had thrown eight consecutive balls. However, he rebounded by getting Polanco to ground into a double play to shortstop to end the first inning.

Bryan Woo out of bullpen – 3:55 p.m.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson also disclosed that All-Star pitcher Bryan Woo would be returning to action on Friday, coming off a pectoral injury he sustained during a start against the Houston Astros on Sep. 19.
Woo will be coming out of the bullpen for Game 5 of the ALCS, nearly a month after leaving the Houston game early. He was previously left off the ALDS roster versus the Detroit Tigers, where the Mariners took the series 3-2.
Bryce Miller named Game 5 starter – 3:30 p.m.
The Seattle Mariners named Bryce Miller as their starting pitcher for Game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, with Bryan Woo to come out of the bullpen.
Miller started for Game 1 of the AL Championship Series, pitching a stellar six innings, only giving up one run in the first inning. He'll be coming off a three-day rest.
ALCS Game 4 last-minute lineup changes – 2:55 p.m.
The Mariners tweaked their lineup Thursday ahead of Game 4.
Victor Robles is out of the lineup after colliding with the wall in right field making a catch on a George Springer fly ball in the third inning of Game 3.
Dominic Canzone will play right field in Robles' place, moving to the field after primarily being a designated hitter throughout the postseason.
Jorge Polanco will take the DH role for Game 4 with Leo Rivas entering the lineup at second base.
Robles did finish Game 3 for the Mariners and manager Dan Wilson said Wednesday night that he believed Robles was OK after the play.
"I think he was all right," Wilson said. "But that's the kind of effort Vic gives and that's what you're going to see, especially this time of year he's going to continue to go all out."
