Federal Way homeowner's quick thinking likely saved house from burning (VIDEO)

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Federal Way homeowners grabbed their water hoses and personally fought a brush fire that was approaching their house, likely saving it from the flames Monday. It was all caught on video.

Tate Ware and his wife did everything they could to protect their Federal Way home from a dangerous brush fire that sparked Monday afternoon.

Fire investigators say they have multiple theories regarding what may have caused the blaze, which started in the 34000 block of 12th Avenue SW, spreading in two directions. The fire jumped a fence, nearly engulfing four homes.

Then the fire jumped a gravel road, heading directly towards another housing development.

“Certainly there was some type of power surge here in the west part of Federal Way just before this fire broke out. Somebody did report hearing a large bang, but at the same time they also noticed that their lights flickered. I also recall before this call was dispatched, that the lights flickered at the fire station as well,” says Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Kahler with South King Fire and Rescue.

Many neighbors claim to have heard several fireworks, but investigators say they don't know if fireworks - which are illegal in this area - were involved.

Neighbors say they are grateful no one was hurt and no homes were damaged.  Fire officials say they've had some small brush fires this year, but this is the first large brush fire and its only June. Their big concern now is the continued dry conditions and the 4th of July weekend fast approaching.
