Oldest running movie theater in WA closing, hoping to relocate

The Grand Illusion movie theater is looking for a new home. The non-profit is offering some ways the community can get involved with the transition and keep enjoying films around town.

Movie screenings will continue through Jan. 30 before they move out of their building at 1403 NE 50th St. in Seattle this February. Their schedule is updated here.

The backstory:

In 2023, the building Grand Illusion operates out of was sold to new owners. Those new owners have decided not to renew the theater's lease, according to their website.

While the only 100% volunteer-run cinema in the United States is doing well, organizers say it will take some time and some money to bring the magic to a new location in their U District home neighborhood.

What you can do:

"While we work on securing and building our new home, we are excited to announce that a partnership with Northwest Film Forum (NWFF) is in the works. We will host regular pop-up screenings at NWFF and other venues across Seattle. Stay tuned for more information."

In addition to partnered screening, those interested can become members for $40. Since they are a non-profit organization, this is tax deductible. As a member, the theater says they will offer reduced admission to coming pop-up events.

"In 2004, the Grand Illusion became a nonprofit organization. Since then, we have operated as the only 100% volunteer-run cinema in the United States. No one is paid to work here and we exist mainly due to the dedication and generosity of 30+ volunteers. Therefore, your financial assistance will go a long way towards helping us find and build an even grander Grand Illusion," reads an entry on their FAQ page.
