Snohomish County deputy assaulted; suspect later surrenders
SEATTLE -- A Snohomish County Sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries after a suspect he was attempting to take into custody assaulted him Friday.
Around 9 a.m. Friday, the deputy was responding to a call about a stolen F-250 Ford truck that was found by a resident in nearby woods.
As the deputy was waiting for the tow truck to arrive, Duane "DJ" Sanders, 29, and a 32-year-old woman arrived at the scene. Sanders and the woman are Stanwood residents. When the two arrived, the deputy recognized Sanders.
Sanders, who has a number of warrants out for his arrest, is not believed to be involved in the theft of the truck, police said. However, the sheriff's office said that when the deputy attempted to take Sanders into custody for his outstanding warrants, Sanders assaulted him, hitting him in the face, ear and hand as he was being handcuffed. Sanders then fled the scene.
The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital and was released after being treated.
Sanders fled, but after an all-day manhunt, he surrendered in Everett.
