Strong easterly winds in the foothills Thursday

Offshore flow will bring strong easterly winds to the western Cascade foothills and western Whatcom County Thursday, but everyone in Western Washington will be under sunny skies Wednesday afternoon.

Winds will pick up overnight for the foothills of Puget Sound as a system digs into the eastern portion of Washington. This will open the door for not only winds, but mountain snow across the eastern Cascades.

County and emergency officials and weather forecasters say the damage left by the Bolt Creek Fire means rain will struggle to seep into the soil. Instead, water likely will rush over blackened earth and downhill, along with a torrent of rocks, mud, and debris.

Mt. Baker Ski Area opening at limited capacity on Nov. 17

The Mount Baker Ski Area will be opening with limited operations, severing season pass-holders only, on Thursday, Nov. 17. The following day, the ski area will be open for pass-holders and day ticket holders.

Overnight temperatures dip again into the cold zone. Look for upper 20s to low 30s as you get up and out the door this week. And along with the very cold starts watch out for areas of fog and freezing fog.
